The Homosassa River is unlike other rivers in regards to its distinctive makeup. An aerial view doesn’t clearly mark the river's path as it’s wandering lee flows through islands and tributaries to the Gulf of Mexico.

The Homosassa River is known world wide as a home to the West Indian Manatee. The head springs are encompassed by the Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park which is devoted to Florida’s natural wildlife from birds to alligators and otters, and last but not least: Lou a honorary florida resident hippopotamus. The park and headsprings also serve as a refuge for injured manatees year round.

Summer on the Homosassa River is all about scallops. People come from all over for scallop season which is from July first to September 30th. Boaters can head out after Marker 4 into the Homosassa Bay for enjoyable afternoon filled with fun, sun and adventure. Scalloping is often referred to as an adult Easter egg hunt, gliding over the grass and scooping up the bountiful morsels. After scalloping you can take a trip to head Springs to cool down relax and wash off the salt. There are locals waiting to shuck your scallops when you come back to your hotel or boat ramp.

Numerous waterfront restaurants line the Homosassa River. The Riverside Resort is home base for the Homosassa TowBoatU.S. crew. In front of the Riverside resort is Monkey Island which is home to several playful monkeys. All in all there is no questioning that Homosassa is one of the Florida's prettiest rivers and best kept secrets!
